How long should a sound play at night?
Most people fall asleep within the first twenty minutes. Playing for eight hours is therefore useful in one specific case — and costly in all the others.
What the duration really changes
An ambient sound serves two distinct moments: falling asleep, where it occupies your attention and masks a household that is still awake, and waking in the night, where it stops the silence of three in the morning from becoming a space to fill with thoughts.
If you do not wake in the night, the sound has nothing left to do once you are asleep: it drains the battery, it warms the phone under the pillow, and it takes away a silence your deep sleep has no need to see replaced.
15 to 20 minutes
for a napThe length of a nap that works, and the one that stops you taking a ninety-minute one you wake up more tired from. The sound stops before deep sleep.
Set it before lying down, not after.
30 minutes to 1 hour
the default settingCovers falling asleep with room to spare on difficult evenings, and stops before the middle of the night. This is the choice that suits most people on most nights.
If you only remember one, remember this one.
Endless
night waking, or constant noiseJustified in two situations: you regularly wake around three or four, or the noise that bothers you lasts all night — a busy street, a flatmate on shifted hours.
At low volume, and plugged in.
Why a hard stop wakes you
The brain does not monitor sound level, it monitors change. A sound that stops dead is a clear change, exactly like a door slamming — and it arrives at the worst moment, while sleep is still light.
A fade-out removes the event: over the last five minutes the volume drops slowly enough that no instant stands out from the one before. You do not hear it stop, which is the only result that counts.
It is also why showing a countdown on screen is a bad idea. Knowing there are twelve minutes left gives you something to watch, and watching keeps you awake.
A mix that holds up all night
Two layers are enough, and the volume matters more than the choice: over eight hours, a pleasant sound at a medium level becomes fatigue. Set it low enough that you doubt you can hear it.
